SOUTH – into the heartland
It was through missing where I was from, that I discovered the place where I am.
I started painting landscapes in New Zealand for the first time, because I missed South Africa. Over the past decade I have been photographing and painting landscapes from the far north to the deep south. This collective of works are created with an ongoing theme, ‘Into the heartland’, referring not just to the hinterland, but also the landscape of the heart.
The latest collection is from my recent travels through the South Island and includes smaller details you find on a road trip.
My landscape paintings originate in my photography of the landscape. Composition, form and colour are central to my subject and I use the viewfinder as a primary canvas.
A retrospective representation of my first 11 years living in New Zealand. The main installation (Rise sons and daughters) is an abstraction of the relationship between culture and identity. The symbols and concepts are also featured in the accompanying painting
