By breaking objects and figures down into distinct areas or planes, Patterson shows different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space and so suggests their three dimensional form. In doing so, he also emphasizes the two-dimensional flatness of the canvas instead of creating the illusion of depth through traditional means. Bright magnetic colours and well-placed patterns heighten diverse subject matter, including landscapes, nudes, musicians and abstracts. Patterson has also made the transition into wall assemblage, which consist of shapes, covered in canvas, treated then painted with acrylic or oil paints. Patterson has built a loyal following and his distinctive work punctuates and elevates many a private collection, providing an oasis from the customary landscapes.
Parkin successfully exhibits with the gallery annually and continues to pursue a Fractionalistic style for depicting his unique portraiture, musical instruments and landscapes. Parkin has also made the transition into wall assemblage paintings which consist of shapes covered in canvas, treated then painted. He is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently a finalist in the 2017 ‘NZ Painting and Printmaking Awards’.
Exhibition on until 26th May
