The ‘best of art’ creates emotional connection, a relationship between the viewer and the work. On seeing Mervin’s paintings for the very first time, I experienced an immediate, intense emotional reaction. It challenged and seduced me. I was excited, overjoyed, saddened, and wanted to know more.
It triggered, in me, a transformation, an intensity that still resonates with me today.
Understanding where his inspiration comes from and his creative processes, exposes the full depth of meaning behind his paintings which reaffirms my reaction and commands my respect. What appears liquid and subconscious mutates into a solid form, an alchemy that has layers hiding and concealing treasures that beg for exploration.
I am reminded of the words of Junot Steinman “The whole culture is telling you to hurry, while the art tells you to take your time. Always listen to the art.”
